Technical Expert

YCI is looking for a tech-savvy consultant who specializes in data management and analysis using Power BI. After three years of implementation, HerStart is in the process of migrating to Power BI as the primary data storage, management, and analysis system for project data across three countries and three levels of HerStart programming. Data is currently stored in XLS and CSV formats and is primarily collected through Kobo Collect. We are seeking a consultant who can lead the migration of this data to a new system, conduct onboarding training of a small team of M&E and project management staff to Power BI, and support HerStart staff to conduct analyses and develop dashboards of project data.

YCI will provide all data in XLS or CSV format to the consultant, alongside a comprehensive introduction to HerStart’s data and history of data management. The consultant will work closely with HerStart’s Canada-based Senior Manager for Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning to complete the assigned deliverables, and may also receive support from three Africa-based Knowledge and Learning Managers

The current scope of work is to support HerStart in migrating to Power BI, conducting descriptive analysis of key data, and developing internal team capacity with this new system. These key activities will take place between August and October. Following a successful migration to Power BI, the consultant will work on an as-requested basis to provide additional technical support and tutorials to support HerStart staff. In the future, additional work may be available to the consultant in ongoing support to the HerStart team as required.

Key deliverables include:

• Leading the migration of project data to Power BI, including basic data cleaning, merging datasets where appropriate, uploading datasets, and developing a file naming and storage system. (Estimated 6 days)
• Conducting, in Power BI, descriptive analytics of key indicators from survey data to support program evaluation. (Estimated 5 days)
• Conducting training sessions with HerStart staff to introduce them to the Power BI system and key functionality (e.g., importing new data, merging new data with existing data, disaggregating data, creating visualizations, etc.) (Estimated 4 days)
• Providing technical support and tutorials, as requested, for HerStart staff. For example, this may include supporting analysis of data in Power BI, or helping staff to develop data dashboards. (Estimated 15 days)

Skills and experience:

•  Minimum 5 years of experience using Power BI for similar data projects 
• Demonstrated experience working with Kobo data 
• Excellent written and spoken communication in English 
• Ability to work across time zones to accommodate a global team, including meetings running up to 11AM ET (GMT-4) 
• Professional demeanour and communication skills 
• Interest in and commitment to gender equality 
• We would especially welcome candidates who have experience with linking Kobo and Power BI via API for live data syncing
