As youth head to college, university or the workforce, many experience a major lifestyle shift from living with family to living on their own for the first time. This transition can be a difficult and stressful time for young adults – at least this was the case for Aimi, Ameeta, Jerin, Meghan and Rachel, the members of Terra Plate, a Climate Futures Lab team in Halifax. Through their personal experience, they found that it was difficult to gauge how much food is needed on a day-to-day basis. This problem can lead to youth making unhealthy food decisions and immense food waste. This group of university students aim to empower youth to take control of their consumption in mindful ways and remove pay walls to help better understand how to consume sustainably.
In collaboration with the Loaded Ladle at Dalhousie University, the team hosted a cooking and sustainability workshop. At the workshop, the team engaged with Dal students and community members about the importance of sustainable consumption, making conscious and healthy food choices, and utilizing groceries to their fullest potential. At the workshop, the attendees got to learn how to cook a simple, affordable and, most importantly, declicious recipe for vegetarian chili.
