Green Wave HFX, a Climate Futures Lab team in Halifax, is making waves in their community with their mission to gamify sustainability and turn everyday tasks into exciting challenges. Darryl, Rohen, Adelade and Sergio hope to encourage everyone, from high school students to working professionals, to understand and appreciate the natural spaces of Mi’kma’ki land.
Using their unique knowledge and skillsets, the team quickly identified that gamification is an effective way to engage their community in a fun way. Through careful research, the team designed a website and created different levels of nature “quests” with a points-based rewards system leading them to locally sourced rewards. Participants are guided through various challenges, ranging from making a cup of tea to planting native pollinator plant species to support sustainability. Completing a challenge gives participants a certain number of points. The team curated locally sourced, sustainable and eco-conscious rewards for the different tier levels.
The team brought their online challenge to their community by hosting a booth at the Halifax Brewery Market, engaging with market goers and handing out free plant propagations and stickers.
