Saumya

Saumya created Halton Composts to spread awareness and provide restaurants with resources on alternative food packaging to plastics. In recent years, especially during COVID-19, restaurants are relying more on takeout leading to more plastic-based food packaging waste in landfills. The project aims to provide restaurants with the information they need to phase out food packaging plastics from circulation and use compostable alternatives.

Saumya has a background in environmental engineering and is currently working in the waste management industry. She has seen the devastation caused by climate change firsthand and has always been passionate about working in the environmental field. Through YCI’s Youth Climate Leadership Program, she is hoping to spread awareness among restaurants in Halton about alternative food packaging to divert from single-use plastic-based packaging and provide them with resources to make informed decisions.
