About EMBRACE

EMBRACE is a four-year project designed to improve the maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) of vulnerable women, girls and boys in Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Rwanda through improving access to essential health services, building the capacity of local health workers, and providing community education programs. Funded in part by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada, EMBRACE is a project led by ADRA Canada and implemented in partnership Youth Challenge International (YCI) and the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre (HDC).

About the opportunity

The EMBRACE Rwanda project is seeking a dynamic Program Development Coordinator – WASH to assess, monitor, and recommend strategies to enhance clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) solutions at the household and community levels. The volunteer will work collaboratively with the Project Manager and Project Agronomist to identify WASH gaps, opportunities, and progress in order to develop strategies to further integrate and enhance sustainable WASH interventions through the EMBRACE project. The Program Development Coordinator will support the alignment of WASH components with the Theory of Change (ToC) and promote partnership with local agencies.

The volunteer will be based in the EMBRACE project office and will be working and living in Nyabihu District for the duration of the placement.

What you will be doing:

Working in coordination with the Rwanda team, the ideal candidate will:

  • Build knowledge on the state of WASH conditions in Nyabihu District (includes understanding determinants, barriers to enacting WASH knowledge, link to malnutrition etc.);
  • Conduct Field Observation, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and Key Informant Interviews (KII) with key partners, project staff, and beneficiaries to collect required research data on WASH and cross cutting themes such as Nutrition, Gender, Environment;
  • Make the linkages between the various project components that intersect with WASH and identify opportunities to strengthen integration;
  • Conduct an extensive literature review looking at WASH on a global, regional, national and local level to capture best practices and application strategies for Rwanda;
  • Collaborate with Agronomist and Monitoring & Evaluation Officer to develop WASH monitoring framework;
  • Support the Agronomist and M&E officer in monitoring, documentation, and reporting on WASH outputs and outcomes;
  • Identify and recommend strategies to integrate WASH sustainability mechanisms into existing activities;
  • Develop a written report and/or action plan to scale and sustain community-based WASH solutions
  • Support, as needed, the roll-out of EMBRACE Peer Learning Platform and other WASH related training in Rwanda.

What you need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Development, Social Sciences, or related field;
  • Demonstrated education and/or professional experience in WASH, interest in Global Health;
  • Strong research, synthesis, and analytical skills;
  • Demonstrated experience with adapting research evidence into practice;
  • Strong understanding of the RBM framework and Global Affairs Canada reporting requirements;
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills with well-developed interpersonal skills;
  • Highly motivated and self-directed;
  • Team-player;
  • Flexible and adaptable to a challenging and high-pressure working environment and unpredictable workload;
  • An ability and willingness to work in rural areas and new cultural and professional settings.
  • Experience travelling, living, working or volunteering abroad.

What would be awesome to have:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in health or social sciences with an emphasis on international development or business administration;
  • Certification or studies in public health, rural development, community development, project management or project monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience implementing health projects, with specific WASH experience;
  • Health promotion or service delivery;
  • Experience with monitoring and evaluation practices;
  • Training and facilitation experience, particularly in a developing country context;
  • Project planning and report writing experience;
  • An awareness of gender sensitive behaviour change strategies;
  • Demonstrated experience conducting successful training and coaching;
  • A strong understanding of process workflows and operating controls.

What we offer:

This is a 10-month subsidized skilled volunteer position. YCI will provide the volunteer with:

  • One week predeparture training and debrief in Toronto and Newcastle (including travel and accommodation)
  • In-country orientation
  • Return airfare and visa/permit fees
  • Vaccinations allowance (up to $300 CDN)
  • Emergency medical and evacuation insurance
  • Support and mentorship while in country
  • $1,200 CAD/month stipend to cover accommodation, food, work-related communication and transportation

YCI does not cover the following:

  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance (recommended)
  • Social activities
  • Personal travel
