Costa Rica: October to November 2012 
| Youth Challenge International (YCI) is recruiting a team of eight Youth Discovery volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30 with diverse skills, experiences and backgrounds for a four-week focused environment and conservation project in Palmichal of Acosta from October 29- November 26, 2012. |
Overview: The community of Palmichal of Acosta is not only known for its beauty, but also for its resilient residents who dared to take action. In 1991, fifteen neighbours sought to protect the forest of the basin Nacientes Palmichal, which is formed by the Negro and Tabarcia Rivers. Through their collective efforts, an association was formed and transformed a once underserved area into the first Natural Monument of Costa Rica.
Today, environmental awareness and education serve as pillars of this community. Palmichal is often revered for its scenic qualities, which boasts primary forests and pristine waters. Nacientes Palmichal’s close proximity to the Costa Rican Capital, San Jose has made it a favourite of eco-tourists.
Key Activities May Include: Strengthen environmental education through organizing environmental awareness campaigns in local schools, in partnership with community leaders and youthSupport sustainable park development initiatives though engaging in small-scale rejuvenation activities including trail maintenance, enhancing green areas etcSupport community led agro-forestry initiatives including tacking out pine trees and other foreign species Conduct ESL training for community members whose livelihood depends on tourism in the region
Recommended Skills and Experience: Experience working in a team with demonstrated leadership skillsRelevant degree in Environmental Science, Conservation, Ecology or the HumanitiesPrevious working or living experience in a cross-cultural setting or in a developing country is an assetAbility to communicate in Spanish and/or willingness to learn before and/or during project
Fundraising Goal: YCI’s volunteer participants are required to fundraise and/or contribute a minimum of $2,500 to contribute to YCI’s global youth development programs worldwide.
