Youth Ambassadors Needed in Ghana

Youth Challenge International (YCI) is recruiting a team of eight volunteers between the ages of 18 and 35 with diverse skills, experiences and backgrounds for a 10-week focused youth development project in Ghana from September 17 to November 26, 2012.


This exciting opportunity will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive ten-week placement in Ghana. While in Ghana, you will work with YCI’s partner the Ghana YMCA or Youth Empowerment Synergy (YES-Ghana) to further the reach and relevance of their youth development program.

Key Project Activities May Include:

  • Work in conjunction with key partner staff and peer educators to design and deliver civic education workshops to identify ways to become peacefully involved in the election process
  • In conjunction with partners and peer educators, design and deliver environmental awareness, including recycling and waste management, and design, develop and deliver a small scale environmental campaign (i.e. tree planting)
  • In conjunction with partners and peer educators, design, develop and deliver small scale initiatives and workshops integrating health education, sexual and reproductive health, substance abuse, information on health services and the distribution of hygiene kits
  • In conjunction with partners and peer educators, develop and deliver a comprehensive small scale initiative focusing on gender equity for International Men’s Day (November 19)
  • In coordination with local partners and youth groups, design and implement  a small scale malaria control and prevention campaign and a small scale campaign that coincides with International Hand washing Day (October 15)
  • In coordination with partners and local youth, design and implement workshops integrating life skills, information technology skills, language skills and youth employment skills development


  • Recommended Skills and Experience:
  • Background in development, political science or the humanities
  • Knowledge of human rights, governance and leadership issues as they relate to youth
  • Knowledge of environmental issues on a global level
  • Experience in designing, developing and implementing awareness and/or educational campaigns
  • Experience in facilitation and/or community mobilization
  • Training in law, governance, political science
  • Training in gender issues; proven effectiveness in cross-cultural settings
  • Experience teaching life skills, English and/or computers
  • Experience working with at-risk or marginalized populations
  • Prior overseas experience an asset


  • Fundraising Goal:
    YCI’s volunteer participants are required to fundraise and/or contribute a minimum of $3,800 towards YCI’s global youth development programs worldwide.
