Youth Ambassadors Needed in Ghana (GH11-8A)

Youth Challenge International (YCI) is recruiting a team of eight volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30 with diverse skills, experiences and backgrounds for an eight-week focused youth development project in Ghana from January to March, 2011.


This exciting opportunity will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive eight-week placement in Ghana. While in Ghana, you will work with YCI’s partner the Ghana YMCA or Youth Empowerment Synergy (YES-Ghana) to further the reach and relevance of their youth development program.

Key Project Activities May Include:
• Work in conjunction with peer educators to design and implement small and/or large-scale outreach initiatives.
• Organize trainings for partners and peer educators on selected health topics, including sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, nutrition and substance abuse.
• Work with partners and peer educators to create linkages between YCI and its partner organizations, and other youth-focused HIV/AIDS organizations.
• Work with partners and peer educators to design and implement vocational training materials to train local youth.
• Support youth in resume/CV development, English language training and information communication technology (ICT) training
• In conjunction with partners, work to strengthen existing youth groups and income-generation groups with youth members by providing resources, tools and linkages.
• Support the establishment of community-based networks/coalitions for addressing common issues.
• Help community-based networks/coalitions to develop medium to long-term strategic plans.

Recommended Skills and Experiences:
• Experience in facilitation and community mobilization.
• Background in development, social science, physical education, teaching, nursing, health sciences or gender studies.
• Training in business, NGO management, monitoring and evaluation, development.
• Strategic planning and work plan development skills.
• Network/coalition building skills.
• Training in law, governance or political science.
• Training in capacity building, youth empowerment, fundraising and/or networking.
• Experience working with at-risk or marginalized populations.
• Training in gender issues.
• Proven effectiveness in cross-cultural settings.
• Prior overseas experience an asset.

Fundraising Goal:
YCI’s volunteer participants are required to fundraise and/or contribute a minimum of $3,900 ($3,300 USD) towards YCI’s global youth development programs worldwide.

What's Not Covered by YCI:
• Airfare and personal expenses

• Travel/medical insurance

• Volunteers will be expected obtain the required vaccinations and take anti-malarials at their own expense
