Youth Innovator Projects in Tanzania
Youth Challenge International (YCI) is recruiting two teams of young Canadians between the ages of 18 and 30 for youth development projects in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Each team will be composed of three volunteers who will contribute to one of the following projects: “Disability Health and Livelihoods” or “Partner Capacity Building.”

These exciting Youth Innovator opportunities will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive four-week placement in Zanzibar and surrounding areas from September 20 - October 18, 2010. While in-country, you will work with YCI’s field staff, local partner organizations and the local government to further the reach and relevance of their programming.

Team 1: Disability Health and Livelihoods

Your background in education, public health, disabilities and/or development will support YCI’s field staff, local partner organizations and the local government to mobilize and train physically disabled youth in Zanzibar on health and livelihoods programming.

Key Responsibilities:
• In conjunction with the Disability Ministry and other key partners, conduct a baseline assessment/research into the needs of youth in Zanzibar who are physically disabled and the existing services that are available to them using participatory research methodologies.
• Conduct targeted outreach and mobilization activities for disabled youth with a focus on HIV and AIDS and sexual reproductive health.
• Conduct outreach and mobilization activities targeted to disabled youth focused on livelihoods training including language, computer skills training.
• In conjunction with local actors and the Disability Ministry, conduct a multi-day disability forum bringing together youth and key stakeholders focused on youth and disability in Zanzibar.
• Complete final reporting to inform key stakeholders and future YCI groups.

Your Skills and Experience:
• Experience working with physically disabled youth 
• Experience facilitating trainings and workshops and conducting research
• Well developed knowledge of youth programs, HIV prevention and related issues
• Strong planning and organization skills
• Computer proficiency 
• Proven community mobilization and cultural communication skills 
• Previous experience in a leadership role preferably with youth aged 15-30
• Appropriate post-secondary education or relevant work experience
• Experience working overseas


Team 2: Partner Capacity Building

Your background in training, monitoring and evaluation and/or human resources combined with strong intercultural communication skills will help build the capacity of our partner, ZANGOC, and the local organizations they work with.

Key Responsibilities:
• In conjunction with ZANGOC staff, develop monitoring and evaluation and reporting templates and timelines for volunteers, program outcomes and planning.
• In conjunction with ZANGOC staff, develop a recruitment plan and HR procedures to be utilized by key staff.
• Work with ZANGOC/UMATI staff to develop tools and strategies to improve local and international volunteer integration with staff ensuing the maximum skill transfer between staff and volunteers.
• Conduct relevant trainings for ZANGOC/UMATI staff highlighted by the partner organization with a focus on research, IT training, writing and editing marketing materials and proposals.
• Complete final report to inform future groups and partner staff.

Your Skills and Experience:
• Experience in facilitating trainings and workshops
• Experience working with grassroots organizations
• Strong planning and organization skills
• Demonstrated report writing skills and knowledge of monitoring and evaluation  
• Computer proficiency  
• Prior cross-cultural experience and strong inter-cultural communication skills
• Appropriate post-secondary education or relevant work experience
• Experience working overseas

Fundraising Goal:
YCI volunteers are required to fundraise and/or contribute a minimum of $1,000 for these projects to contribute towards YCI’s global youth development programs.

What’s Not Covered by YCI:
• Airfare
• Personal expenses
• Visa fees
• Participants will be expected obtain the required vaccinations and take anti-malarials at their own expense
