YCI Scholarships Available: Guyana, Fall 2010
Build your skills and experience by participating in an innovative youth-focused health project this fall in Central or South America.

Youth Challenge International (YCI) is awarding a limited number of $1,500 ($1,300 USD) scholarships to exceptional youth aged 18 to 30. These scholarships can be used towards a five-week youth development project in Guyana this fall.

The scholarship will be awarded to individuals with a demonstrated commitment to their community and it is intended to provide young leaders with the opportunity to turn positive civic involvement into global action. They are merit based and will be awarded on a rolling first-come, first-served basis.

About the placement in Guyana:

This exciting opportunity will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive five-week placement in rural Guyana. While in Guyana, you will work with YCI’s partner, Youth Challenge Guyana, to further the reach and relevance of their youth development program with a specific focus on health promotion and literacy. This project will depart on November 1st, 2010, and return on December 6th, 2010.

Key project activities may include:

• Conduct HIV/AIDS awareness and information sessions in conjunction with local youth.
• Conduct hygiene awareness and information sessions in conjunction with local youth.
• Increase the numerical and literacy skills of young people and adults in the local community.
• Provide teaching support to local schools that are understaffed.
• Work with in-school youth design and implement an after-school literacy program.
• Build the capacity of community leaders to develop and implement community interventions.
• Conduct leadership development training modules for in-school youth. Topics may include: effective communication techniques, basic human rights, the democratic process, team-building and planning exercises, and basic organization and mobilization techniques.


How to Apply:

1. Determine if you are eligible. Eligibility criteria is as follows:

• Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years of age
• Applicants must be applying for YCI’s five-week fall project in Guyan (departing November 1st)
• Scholarships must be used towards the Guyana program

2. Apply online using YCI's application form available at http://yci.org/html/volunteer/globally/applynow.asp. Please indicate on your application (in the “program preference” area) that you’re interested in applying for the “Guyana/Guatemala Scholarship Program.”

3. Submit your scholarship essay to generalinfo@yci.org. These must be submitted on the same date you submit your online application. Tell us:

“How would a volunteer opportunity with YCI contribute to your understanding of what it means to be a global citizen?”

Entries on the above topic may be in the form of a written essay, a photo essay or a video entry:
• Personal Essays: Must be between 600 and 800 words in length and submitted in .doc format.
• Photo Essays: Must be less than 20 photos and include captions. This may be submitted through a PowerPoint presentation or PDF format.
• Video Entries: Must be no more than three minutes in length. To submit your video, please upload your submission onto YouTube and provide the link to YCI. Videos may also be submitted through email or mail. Use only original or royalty-free music and images in your video.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling first-come, first-served basis.
