Youth Leadership Teams: Summer 2010Youth Leadership Teams include:
- Health Team in Kenya
- Environment Team in Ghana
- Economic Development in Tanzania
Environment Team in Ghana Youth Challenge International’s Youth Leadership Team is an exciting opportunity that will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive five-week placement in Ghana and surrounding areas. While in-country, you will work with YCI’s field staff and local partner organizations, such as the YMCA Ghana, to further the reach and relevance of YCI’s environment program.
Potential Team Activities May Include: • Support partners to identify existing youth groups focused on or interested in environmental awareness. • Connect youth groups to environmental organizations and design learning resources. • Facilitate participatory arts initiatives to highlight environmental issues contextual to local youth to improve both technological skills and environmental awareness. • Work with partners to consider the environmental impact of their activities, reduce waste and encourage the responsible use of resources. • Conduct workshops with partners and youth groups on local environmental issues. • Implement small-scale environmental programming initiatives with youth groups based on environmental awareness and education.
Your Team's Skills and Experience: • Background in Environmental Science, Environmental Health, International Development or related field • Experience with environmental programming, preferably overseas with a focus on Youth • Experience leading workshops • Experience working with at-risk, marginalized and/or indigenous populations • Training in gender issues; proven effectiveness in cross-cultural settings • Previous experience in program design, budget management and monitoring and evaluation • Prior overseas experience an asset

Leadership Development Team in Tanzania Youth Challenge International’s Youth Leadership Team is an exciting opportunity that will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive five-week placement in Tanzania and surrounding areas. While in-country, you will work with YCI’s field staff and local partner organizations to further the reach and relevance of YCI’s programming.
Potential Team Activities May Include: • Develop and deliver civic education workshops for youth during the run-up to the Tanzanian elections. • Facilitate peer educators and youth groups to identify ways to become peacefully involved in the election process. • In conjunction with partners, peer educators and youth groups design and implement multi-media initiatives including radio/drama/music/ICT to sensitize and mobilize youth about their electoral rights. • Work with partners to design and implement a six- module good governance program utilizing volunteers, youth groups and peer educators. • In collaboration with peer educators and youth groups conduct outreaches to mobilize ‘out of school’ youth to attend good governance workshops. • In conjunction with local partners, youth groups, volunteers and peer educators, deliver training good governance workshops, including different modes of government, challenges to good government, local government structures, corruption, women in government and methods of political involvement specific to youth.
Your Team's Skills and Experience: • Background in Political Science, International Relations, International Development or related field • Experience with good governance, public engagement or active citizenship programming, preferably overseas with a focus on youth • Experience leading workshops • Experience working with at-risk, marginalized and/or indigenous populations • Training in gender issues; proven effectiveness in cross-cultural settings • Previous experience in program design, budget management and monitoring and evaluation • Prior overseas experience an asset • Prior experience in facilitating trainings and workshop • Strong planning, organization and writing skills • Appropriate post-secondary education or relevant work/volunteer experience

Economic Development Team in Tanzania Youth Challenge International’s Youth Leadership Team is an exciting opportunity that will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive five-week placement in Tanzania and surrounding areas. While in-country, you will work with YCI’s field staff and local partner organizations to further the reach and relevance of YCI’s economic development program.
Potential Team Activities May Include: • In conjunction with partners develop and deliver basic computer training workshops • Develop and deliver communication courses including language training, interview skills, CV development and other relevant employment skills as defined by youth. • Utilize partner staff, YCI volunteers and recipients of past training courses to coordinate and facilitate new sessions. • Organize a multi-day ‘hire one youth’ job fair including members of the private sector and social economy to encourage hiring young people reaching a total of youth. • Identify and strengthen existing youth groups and income-generation groups with youth members by providing resources, tools and linkages with possible partners and funding sources for micro-credit initiatives. • Support existing income generation groups with youth members by supporting partners to organize business training workshops, marketing events and networking opportunities. • Link partners and income generation groups to organizations offering specialized training, microcredit or other training opportunities.
Your Team's Skills and Experience: • Background in Economics, Commerce, Business, Marketing, International Development or related field • Experience with small business or private sector development programming, preferably overseas with a focus on youth • Experience leading workshops • Experience working with at-risk, marginalized and/or indigenous populations • Training in gender issues; proven effectiveness in cross-cultural settings • Previous experience in program design, budget management and monitoring and evaluation • Prior overseas experience an asset • Prior experience in facilitating trainings and workshop • Strong planning, organization and writing skills • Appropriate post-secondary education or relevant work/volunteer experience

Health Team in Kenya Youth Challenge International’s Youth Leadership Team is an exciting opportunity that will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive four-week placement in Mombasa, Kenya and surrounding areas. While in-country, you will work with YCI’s field staff and local partner organizations to further the reach and relevance of YCI’s Health program.
Potential Team Activities May Include:
- Design and facilitate programming (courses, workshops,performances, discussions) in specialized topics of HIV prevention with local partner organization staff.
- Plan and oversee the replication of this training with youth and
local partners.
- Identify and support local groups of peer educators to lead and
co-facilitate outreach activities.
- Potential workshops to include:
- Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PTMCT);
- Substance abuse, health and HIV/AIDS;
- HIV/AIDS work with most at-risk populations (MARPS) - youth,
women, orphans and vulnerable children, refugees and IDPs.
- Nutrition for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA);
- Living positively;
- Treatment protocols for ARV use;
- Stigma reduction and legal issues.
- Support partners by mobilizing resources including basic medical,
health and learning materials from multiple sources to support health programming.
Your Team's Skills and Experience: • Training in public health; experience leading health discussions; good knowledge of HIV/AIDS and other STIs • Training in gender issues; proven effectiveness in cross-cultural settings • Facilitating trainings and workshops • Strong planning, organization and writing skills • Community mobilization and prior cross-cultural experience preferred • Previous experience in a leadership role, preferably with youth aged 15 to 30 • Well-developed knowledge of youth programs, HIV/AIDS prevention and related issues • Appropriate post-secondary education or relevant work/volunteer experience

Fundraising Goal: YCI’s Youth Leadership teams are required to fundraise and/or contribute a minimum of $3,000 each towards YCI’s global youth development programs worldwide.
What's Covered by YCI: • Preparatory support and pre-project distance learning • In-country training • Modest local accommodations and food • In-country work-related travel • Comprehensive medical and evacuation insurance
What's Not Covered by YCI: • Airfare and personal expenses • Travel insurance • Volunteers will be expected obtain the required vaccinations and take anti-malarials at their own expense
