Mozambique, one of the poorest countries in the world at independence, has emerged from decades of war to become one of Africa’s best-performing economies. Despite this economic growth and improvements to the higher education system, youth unemployment remains very high and job opportunities remain elusive.  Youth represent an enormous pool of talent, drive and determination in Mozambique. YCI wants to create a youth development program that harnesses the immense capabilities of the youth to create sustainable livelihoods.

In recent years, Mozambique has had an influx of development organizations, but few who focus solely on youth development. The government has begun implementing youth initiatives through various international partnerships, but these programs tend to be large infrastructure projects, limiting the participation of many youth.

In Mozambique, 39% of the over 6 million youth are in a state of non-employment (meaning they are neither employed or in school). For young women, the situation is worse, with 56% counted as non-employed.

YCI offers Youth Ambassador and Youth Leadership Team projects in Mozambique. Volunteers are provided with unique opportunities to acquire new skills and apply previous experience to community development initiatives.
