YCI is not a pleasure cruise with four-star service! This is a community development program driven by youth who exercise initiative and take personal responsibility for their actions and decisions. We rely on sound judgment, common sense and compatibility among participants for success.
You should be prepared to positively contribute to your group and to your community! This could range from taking your turn cooking for your entire group to fetching and purifying water for the workers on the job site to organizing a community football tournament.
Living conditions are simple. Our programs may occur in remote regions where infrastructure is basic and running water or electricity may not be available. Some programs occur in more developed locations where there is access to pay phones and internet cafes.
You may be required to sleep on the ground, in a hammock or on a wooden frame with foam mattress. Groups are mixed gender and privacy is at a premium. Very rarely are bathrooms located indoors! Dinner can be as simple as rice and beans; there can be limited access to fresh fruit and vegetables and meat and cold drinks can be rare. The key is having the right attitude and being up for the challenge! |
