| COSTA RICA INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM |
 |
The Challenge:
In Costa Rica, the lack of infrastructure in many communities continues to be a permanent obstacle to development. Many places have little access to education, health care or potable water as a result of a lack of necessary public facilities. In addition, Costa Rica has an admirable record of national park development, yet they lack resources such as trails and buildings to support eco-tourism.
What does YCI bring to the challenge?
In many cases, support for community building projects depends on the efforts of NGOs like YCI. A third party such as YCI, with reliable, motivated groups of volunteers, provides an invaluable injection of labour that often proves pivotal in helping communities achieve the threshold necessary to complete critical phases of construction. This has the dual outcome of accelerating completion dates of projects, while re-igniting community commitment and energy for stalled projects.
What action is YCI taking?
YCI and its local partner, Reto Juvenil Internacional, are working with local communities to help accelerate their infrastructure projects. These include: schools and playgrounds, aqueducts, community centres, health posts and national park infrastructure. Working in priority communities, our projects are managed by local community groups, each directly responsible for project success. Each project in turn acts as a catalyst for community participation. |
