GRENADA

Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands in the Caribbean, and is a tiny point on most world maps with an area of only 133 square miles. A rolling, mountainous island covered with fragrant spice trees and rare tropical flowers, Grenada is only 21 miles long and 12 miles wide and has a population of roughly 100,000 people. The islands are of volcanic origin with extremely rich soil. Grenada's interior is very mountainous with Mount St. Catherine being the highest at 2,756 feet. Several small rivers with beautiful waterfalls flow into the sea from these mountains.

Grenada is known as ‘The Spice Island’ as it produces nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. The food demonstrates the mixture of flavors in the Grenadian society. French influence is found in the well seasoned spicy food and styles of cooking similar to those found in New Orleans and some French architecture has survived from the 1700s.

Island culture is heavily influenced by the African roots of most Grenadian people but Indian influence is also seen in the cuisine. Foods aren't the only important aspect of Grenadian culture.
Music, dance, and festivals are also extremely important. Grenada is a Constitutional monarchy. A governor-general represents the sovereign, Elizabeth II who is the head of state.

Grenada, being on the southern edge of the hurricane belt, has suffered three major hurricanes which have caused severe damage and several deaths. YCI began working on the neighboring island of Carriacou (pop. 5,000) in September, 2004 as a ‘reconstruction and social recovery’ project in response to the devastation of Hurricanes Ivan and Emily.  The program has now seen over two years of successful local partnership and focuses on supporting youth skills development and local gender equity and parenting support.

While on project you will work on small team projects based in the picturesque town of Hillsborough, Carriacou. Learn about the island’s unique history, take part in local drum dances and witness the deep aqua bays and spectacular hill views that make Carriacou one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean.
