YCI works with local youth in program countries to empower them and make them conscious citizens of their communities and countries. By carrying out workshops and training on human rights, women’s rights, advocacy and leadership YCI is helping youth in the developing world acquire knowledge about their rights and freedoms so that they become informed citizens.
Objective: To enable youth to assume leadership roles within their communities and utilize governance structures to ensure their voices are heard.
Youth are frequently disregarded in community decision-making processes while lip service is paid to their future as the community leaders of tomorrow. This program promotes a heightened level of contribution to community decisions, developments and directions from young community leaders; enabling young people to take on leadership in their community and utilize governance structures to ensure their needs are met:
- Motivating Young Community Leaders: YCI provides a platform for motivating youth to take on key roles within their communities and help them to find a voice on issues that concern them and their peers. This is accomplished through a variety of activities: youth clubs, sports tournaments, literacy, music, arts and skills-building classes. YCI works alongside existing youth leaders in strengthening their skills and empower a new generation of young people to speak out.
- Promoting Youth Governance and Knowledge of Rights: YCI uses a variety of approaches including workshops, sessions in youth clubs, and where possible, linkages with schools and colleges to promote youth advocacy. Youth identify issues on which they wish to affect change and YCI works closely with them to learn, organize and advocate with local and even national institutions.
