Gender Equity for Youth
A main focus of YCI projects is to empower local women who are often marginalized and the poorest members of society, both in terms of skills and opportunities. Women’s empowerment programming increases the capacity and networking opportunities for existing women’s groups, provides education on gender equality and training opportunities for young mothers. The programs use a range of methodologies and organizing various community events to embrace women’s full potential and promote gender equality.

Objective: To promote equitable access and contribution to community resources and developments for young women.

Young women face a number of additional challenges beyond those already faced by youth in terms of integration, income generation, and contributions to community decision-making processes. This program provides opportunities for young women to address key challenges such as:
  1. Promoting Leadership for Young Women: Youth participate in “Young Women’s Empowerment” workshops, designed to strengthen leadership opportunities for young women while creating an open space for dialogue on relevant gender challenges and advocating the role of young women in community governance activities.  Young female participants also receive specific women-focused Sexual and Reproductive Health training.

  2. Capacity Building for Civil Society Groups: YCI also works with existing local women’s groups to focus on skills training, committee management, networking, proposal writing, advocacy and community integration. YCI aims to provided ‘safe’ spaces for what are often first discussions of sensitive subjects that affect young women.

  3. Crosscutting Gender Themes: All YCI programs are equipped with cross cutting gender equality and sensitivity themes. Our programs boast a 50% or higher percentage of women beneficiaries. Employability and entrepreneurship programming promotes and equips young women with the skill sets necessary to achieve equitable employment opportunities, while our HIV/AIDS programming works to address sexual rights for young women and particular stigmas faced by women living with HIV. Lastly, YCI’s citizenship and governance programming promotes young women as key contributors to their communities.
